The New 2026 Mazda CX-5

2026 Mazda CX-5

What’s new for the 2026 Mazda CX-5 and why it changes everything for compact SUVs

The all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5 marks a significant evolution of Mazda’s most successful crossover, and it is already drawing strong interest from drivers in Newmarket and across York Region. It combines a more confident design, substantially improved interior space, and the most advanced technology ever offered in the model. As a third-generation update, it builds on more than a decade of success in Canada and globally, positioning the CX-5 as a more premium, tech-forward option for York Region commuters, families and weekend travellers alike.

Since its introduction in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 has played a defining role in Mazda’s lineup, showcasing SkyActiv engineering and the brand’s Kodo design philosophy. With more than 300,000 sold in Canada and over 4.5 million worldwide, the CX-5 has become a benchmark in the compact SUV segment. The 2026 model retains that identity while addressing the areas buyers care most about today: space, technology, comfort, and safety.

New Mazda CX-5

Design evolution inspired by modern versatility

The exterior design of the 2026 CX-5 introduces a bolder and more athletic presence while maintaining the familiar proportions that make it instantly recognizable. Mazda describes the concept as “Wearable Gear,” an approach inspired by clothing that is functional, refined, and adaptable to different environments. The result is an SUV that feels equally at home in urban settings and on weekend adventures.

The latest evolution of Kodo design sharpens the CX-5’s stance with a wider, more sculpted front end, slimmer and more angular lighting elements, and a refined Mazda Signature Wing grille. Design cues now visually align the CX-5 with Mazda’s larger crossovers, including the CX-70 and CX-90, particularly at the rear where new lighting elements and bold MAZDA lettering replace the traditional badge.

Beyond appearance, the redesign brings meaningful dimensional changes. The 2026 CX-5 is approximately 4.5 inches longer in both overall length and wheelbase, and slightly wider than the outgoing model. These changes improve stability, proportions, and most importantly, interior space.

Mazda CX-5 Interior

A noticeably larger and more comfortable interior

Inside, the 2026 CX-5 takes a calmer, more spacious approach that prioritizes comfort and usability for both drivers and passengers. Larger door openings make getting in and out easier, a detail that will matter to families dealing with car seats and daily errands. Rear-seat passengers benefit from increased legroom, knee room, and headroom, making the CX-5 far more accommodating on longer trips.

An available panoramic sunroof enhances the sense of openness, while carefully selected materials and finishes reflect Mazda’s Japanese craftsmanship. Ambient lighting integrated into the front door trims offers a choice of seven colours, subtly elevating the cabin atmosphere without distracting the driver at night.

Cargo capacity also sees meaningful improvement. The rear cargo area is longer and taller than before, with a lower lift-in height that simplifies loading heavier or bulkier items. These changes make the CX-5 more practical for everything from grocery runs to road trips.

Mazda’s largest touchscreen and Google built-in

Technology is one of the biggest upgrades for the 2026 CX-5. At the centre of the dashboard is an available 15.6-inch integrated touchscreen, the largest ever fitted to a Mazda vehicle. Designed with smartphone-style usability, the interface features a customizable home screen and quick access to frequently used functions.

For the first time, the CX-5 offers Google built-in, bringing Google Maps, Google Assistant, and access to the Google Play Store directly into the vehicle. Drivers can use natural voice commands to navigate, control settings, and access information without memorizing specific phrases. Fresh traffic data and place information improve navigation accuracy, while supported apps for music, news, and video streaming help the system feel like a seamless extension of everyday digital life.

This setup also allows Mazda to introduce future enhancements and third-party features through software updates, helping the CX-5 remain current over time.

Safety-focused engineering and confident driving dynamics

Mazda’s focus on safety continues with the 2026 CX-5. Building on its history as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ recipient, the new model introduces an expanded suite of standard and available Advanced Driver Assistance Systems designed to enhance driver awareness and confidence in real-world conditions.

Under the hood, the CX-5 launches with a proven 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered through a six-speed automatic transmission, with i-Activ all-wheel drive standard across the lineup. The powertrain has been recalibrated to balance sharper throttle response with quieter, more relaxed operation during steady driving.

Looking ahead, Mazda has confirmed that a hybrid version of the CX-5 will arrive in 2027. This model will introduce the new SkyActiv-Z engine paired with Mazda Hybrid System technology, targeting improved efficiency while preserving the engaging driving character the CX-5 is known for.
